Ibrahim, also known as Abraham in the Biblical narrative, features prominently in Islam, Christianity and Judaism. He is also the most elaborately written about Prophet in the Quran (Sura 14). He was given the title of Khalil-ul-Allah (friend of God) for his dedication and love for Him. He was a strict monotheist and undertook journeys to distant places in order to spread the word of God to all. Throughout the Quran, there are references to his kindness and good conduct which is naturally expected of a true believer. His sons Ismail (Ishmael) and Is’haq (Isaac) were Prophets too and it was God’s will for them to be Abraham’s progeny.

Ibrahim always sought help from God and tried to know more about Him. He would look at the stars, the moon and the Sun hoping to get further testimonies of God and His creations. On one such day, he heard the call of God which made him prostrate before Him. Another miracle attributed to Ibrahim was that he chopped off four birds and placed them on different hills but when he called out to them, all the four birds regained their lives and flew back to him. This gave him the message that God alone was the master of life and death and that all human beings were the carriers of His will. This was to form the basis of his confrontation with the self-appointed King Namrood (Nimrod) who had proclaimed that he could order the execution of anyone he wished, or save anyone he willed. To counter him, Ibrahim remarked that his God alone could make the Sun set in the West and not Namrood who had no such powers.

Ibrahim also rebuilt the Kaaba which was impacted by the Great Flood of Nuuh (Noah). In fact, certain rituals of hajj were also instituted by him. Similarly, every year on the eve of Id-al-Adha, Muslims sacrifice a sacred animal to commemorate the great sacrifice Ibrahim was about to make as a result of a dream in which God had commanded him to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael). When the appointed hour came, God replaced Ismail with a goat. That is how Ibrahim came successful through this terrible test.

Reference: Na jab tak koi hampyala ho main mai naheen peeta/Naheen mehmaan to faaqa hai Khalilullah ke ghar mein (Haider Ali Atish), Phir se momin aatish-e Namrood mein daale gaye/Hai yehi sunnat Khalilullah ki maatam na kar (Muzaffar Ali Syed), Nigaah-e dil se jis din uswae Shabbir dekhenge/Khalilullah apne khwab ki taabeer dekhenge (Rahmat Ilahi Barq Azmi).
