आज फिर चाँद उस ने माँगा है
आज फिर चाँद उस ने माँगा है
चाँद का दाग़ फिर छुपाना है
Once again he has asked for the moon
The scar in the moon must again be hidden
चाँद का हुस्न तो है ला-सानी
फिर भी कितना फ़लक पे तन्हा है
The beauty of the moon is without compare
Yet it is so lonesome in the skies
काश कुछ और माँगता मुझ से
चाँद ख़ुद गर्दिशों का मारा है
If only you had asked me for something else
The moon is caught in its own turmoil
दूर है चाँद इस ज़मीं से बहुत
फिर भी हर शब तवाफ़ करता है
The moon is far, far away from this world
Yet every night it is spinning around in circles
बस्तियों से निकल के सहरा में
जुस्तुजू किस की रोज़ करता है
Coming out of the neighbourhoods to go into the wilderness
In whose search does he go night agter night
किस ख़ता की सज़ा मिली उस को
किस लिए रोज़ घटता बढ़ता है
For what fault is he being so punished
That he must wax and wane every night
चाँद से ये ज़मीं नहीं तन्हा
ऐ फ़लक तू भी जगमगाया है
The earth is not the only one
The sky too is lit by the moon
आज तारों की बज़्म चमकी है
चाँद पर बादलों का साया है
The cluster of stars is resplendent today
The moon is covered by the shadow of the clouds
रौशनी फूट निकली मिसरों से
चाँद को जब ग़ज़ल में सोचा है
Rediance burst out of my verses
When I potray the moon in my ghazals
