About The Author

Born on 26 January 1971, Prof. Muhammad Kazim is a lecturer in the Department of Urdu, Delhi University. He completed his primary education in 1987 from Calcutta Labor Board and secondary education from the renowned CMO High School Calcutta. He graduated from the Maulana Azad College, Calcutta University with Urdu Honors. After that, he obtained degrees in MA, M.Phil., Mass Media and Ph.D. from the Jawaharlal Nehru University. During his education he was associated with several Urdu newspapers and wrote columns for many of them. In 1998, he joined the Information Service of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India through the UPSC. Until 2002, he was a member of the editorial team of the prestigious Urdu monthly Aaj Kal, published by the Publications Division of the Ministry. There, he along with the editor Mehboob-ur-Rehman Farooqi compiled important books such as Aaj Kal Ke Drama, Aaj Kal Ke Mazamen, Aaj Kal Ke Afsane, Aaj Kal Aur Sahafat, and Aaj Kal Aur Gard-e-Karvaan. He was appointed as Lecturer in the Department of Urdu, Delhi University in 2002, Associate Professor in 2014, and Professor in 2017, the position has been serving till now. He is also fulfilling the additional responsibilities given to him by the University Deputy Proctor and Warden of various hostels etc. Besides Delhi University, he is also working as a visiting fellow in various institutions and universities including Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, Sri Ram Center for Performing Arts, New Delhi, and National School of Drama, Delhi. His main field of interest is Drama and its criticism. So far, around twenty plays have been performed under his direction which Urdu Academy Delhi included in its Urdu Drama Festival for eight consecutive years. Further, he was awarded the best Drama director for five consecutive years by the Sahtiya Kala Parishad, Delhi Govenment. In addition, he participates as a Drama Director in various Drama Festivals in different states of India. He has been writing drama-centered columns every week for five years now. He has translated and published various Hindi and English dramas in Urdu and popular Urdu dramas in Hindi. He is the founder and honorary general secretary of the world-renowned “Behrup Arts Group”. In addition, among his published books, Urdu Drama: Fann, Tarikh Aur Tajziya, Hindustani Nukkad Natak Aur us Ki Samaaji Maanviyat, Bengal Mein Urdu Nukkad Natak, Mashriqi Hind Mein Urdu NukkaD Natak, Yog raaj ki kahaniyan, Dastan-Goi (Urdu and Hindi), Mujtaba Hussain: Fann Aur Shakhsiyat, Nasr Ghazali: Fann Aur Shakhsiyat, and Ishariya Mahnama Urdu are important. 

Books compiled by him include translations of 3 dramas from Henrik Ibsen, Sitam Ki Inteha Kya Hai? (Confiscated Dramas), Mere Bistar Ke Niche, Ghat Wali Billi, Meri Par-Dadi aur Par-Nani, have come to the fore. In addition to these books, his writing journey continues. Beyond various states in India, Prof. Muhammad Kazim has traveled extensively abroad, including Mauritius, Egypt, Turkey, Uzbekistan and Bangladesh. His articles are included in more than thirty books published from different states of India. More than 60 research and critical articles have been published in journals from different parts of the country and abroad. About 120 national and international seminars and conferences have hosted him to dialogue on various topics. At the special invitation of the Urdu-speaking Union of Mauritius, the government organized a ten-day workshop in Mauritius to promote Urdu drama, in which he discussed the intricacies of scriptwriting and the art of acting, as well as rehearsing it. In recognition of his research, critical, and theatrical contributions, Delhi Urdu Academy, West Bengal Urdu Academy, Rajasthan Urdu Academy, and Bihar Urdu Academy have all conferred him with prestigious awards. Further, for his contribution to drama and theater, he has been presented with 'Kal Hind Niaz Ahmad Khan Award' (2021), and the eminent 'Hum Sab Ghalib Award for Drama' in 2017, by the Muslim Institute Kolkata and Ghalib Institute.

Professor Muhammad Kazim's scholarly and literary journey is still going strong. His research and critical essays and books are important not only for the students but also for the serious readers of Urdu language and literature.
