غالب کی اہمیت اردو زبان میں وہی ہے جو حافظ شیرازی کی فارسی زبان میں۔ جس طرح سے حافظ شیرازی فارسی غزلیات کا سب سے بڑا شاعر ہے اسی طرح غالب اردو غزلیات کا امام ہے بلکہ غالب کی نثر کو اگر شامل کر لیا جائے تو شاید حافظ سے چند گام آگے نکل جائے۔ اردو زبان میں سب سے زیادہ پڑھا اور سمجھا جانے والا شاعر غالب ہی ہے اور اسی کو سب سے زیادہ سمجھایا گیا ہے۔ وہی سب سے زیادہ چھاپا گیا ہے۔ غالب کو اگرچہ اپنی فارسی دانی پر ناز تھا مگر شہرت انہیں ان کی اردو شاعری کی وجہ سے ملی جسے وہ "بے رنگ من "کہہ کر پکارتے تھے۔ زیر نظر کتاب دیوان غالب کی شرح ہے جو ردیف کے حساب سے مشرح کی گئی ہے۔ جس میں وہ سب سے پہلے شعر نقل کرتے ہیں پھر اس شعر کے مشکل الفاظ کی گرہ کھولتے ہیں پھر مضمون کی عقدہ کشائی کرتے ہیں اور شعر کے ہر ہر پہلو پر بات کرتے ہیں۔ اس لئے دیوان غالب کو سمجھنے کے لئے یہ ایک بہترین شرح ہے جو اردو کے شائقین اور غالب کے پڑھنے والوں کے لئے ایک بیش بہا تحفہ ہے۔ خیال رہے کہ کلام غالب کی مقبولیت کے پیش نظر کئی لوگوں نے ان کے کلام کی شرح کی ہے، زیر نظر ایک خاص قسم کی دلچسپ مزاحیہ شرح ہے، جس کو شوکت تھانوی نے اپنے مزاحیہ لہجے میں انجام دیا ہے۔ شوکت تھانوی نے غالب کے اشعار کی کچھ اس انداز میں شرح کی ہے کہ ہم ان مفاہیم کا تصور بھی نہیں کر سکتے۔ بس ہنس سکتے ہیں۔

Mohammed Umr Shaukat Thanvi was a versatile genius poet, a journalist, and a story-writer. But he was primarily a humorist as is indicated by the titles of his famous literary works: Mauj-e-Tabassum, Bahr-e-Tabassum, Sail-e-Tabassum, and Toofaan-e-Tabassum. Historically speaking, Shaukat stands between the old and new schools of poetry. He combines in his humorous and satirical verse the wit and brilliance of the Avadh Panch with the sobriety and shrewdness of the new age. He uses his weapons of wit and humor, not only to provoke laughter and provide amusement but to expose the faults and foibles of society. This is particularly true of the poems included in this anthology-Shaair ki Beewi, Khwab-e-Azadi, Family Planning, and Aata, which are intended to focus, respectively, on the social and economic poverty of the poets and writers, dangers of confusing liberty with license, the problem of overpopulation, and the greed and hypocrisy of the business class.


Shaukat Thanvi was born in Thana Bhawan (Uttar Pradesh), India, but migrated to Pakistan after the partition. After working for ten years at Pakistan Radio, he moved to Karachi where he joined the editorial board of the newspaper, Jang, of which he also became the editor. He also wrote for several other literary journals such as Sar Panch, Hamdam, Lucknow, Millat, etc. Shaukat Thanvi died in Lahore on 4 May 1963.
