About The Author

A passion for music and a unique musical talent predisposed Minu Bakshi towards music from an early age. Intense and a perfectionist by nature Minu realised that success and satisfaction could only be achieved through rigorous training and hard work. Her teacher for classical music for many years was Ustad Ghulam Hussain Khan, the older son of Ustad Mushtaq Hussain Khan Sahib, the famous singer of Rampur Gharana and later Ustad Marghoob Hussain Khan, grandson of Bade Ustaad Ghulam Ali Khan Saab. Minu Bakshi is extremely proficient and adept at singing in Punjabi, her mother tongue. She has two albums of Punjabi wedding songs ‘Lao Mehndiyan I’ and ‘Lao Mehndiyan II’, to her credit, released by Music Today both of which have proven to best sellers and are always in demand. The former was nominated for the Best Punjabi Album in the ETC Music awards 2006. Her Punjabi albums have a distinctive folk texture and are infused with modern sounds and a rustic joie de vivre’.

With a background in classical music and leaning towards Urdu poetry, it was very much in the natural course that Minu should eventually make ghazal singing the genre of music closest to her heart. And so, towards this end she studied Urdu, the language of the ghazal, aspiring to fully relish and understand the nuances of Urdu poetry. Her refined ear further enabled her to appreciate and learn the delicacies of Urdu pronunciation. She is also a poet and writes many of the lyrics of her songs herself. Minu’s third album, ‘Phir se’ is a collection of eight timeless ghazals from some of the most well known Shayars of this era. Here, her music is imbued with a resonating soulful quality and her exquisitely trained voice unleashes music that is full of passion and sentiment and hence brings out the best ‘shayari’ and ‘gayaki’.

Recently, she was conferred with the “Order of Isabella la Catolica” by the Spanish Ambassador on the 17th of September, 2014 for her services towards promotion of Spain and its culture. This is the 2nd Highest Order given to a foreigner by the King of Spain.

Minu Bakshi wears different hats: she is a poet, singer, professor of Spanish, social worker, wife and mother. She is well-known in music circles for her popular renditions of Punjabi folk music. Minu lives in Delhi with her husband Kanwaljit Bakshi.
