aae ho to ye hijab kya hai
aa.e ho to ye hijāb kyā hai
muñh khol do naqāb kyā hai
when you have come / then why this modesty?
unveil yourself / and show your face to me
siine meñ Thahartā hī nahīñ dil
yā-rab ise iztirāb kyā hai
my heart does not remain within my breast
tell me, O Lord, what is its unrest?
kal teġh nikāl mujh se bolā
tū dekh to is kī aab kyā hai
she drew her sword and then she said to me
the luster and the shine you ought to see
ma.alūm nahīñ ki apnā dīvāñ
hai marsiya yā kitāb kyā hai
I know not / if my tome of poetry
is it a book / or else an elegy?
jo mar ga.e maare lutf hī ke
phir un pe miyāñ itaab kyā hai
when due to pleasure, itself, you have died
then why, with her, does your anger abide?
auroñ se to hai ye be-hijābī
mujh se hī tujhe hijāb kyā hai
to others, you / do deign to show your face
why just with me / is your veil in place?
ai 'mus.hafī' uTh ye dhuup aa.ī
itnā bhī divāne ḳhvāb kyā hai
wake 'mus.hafi'! and see the sunlight stream
O crazy one, say how long shall you dream?
