Areeb Usmani on Jaun Elia, AMU, and the Ghazal | Rekhta Room | Season 1 | Episode 2 . He was a professional fast bowler until one injury ended it all. Then he found poetry. In this Rekhta Room session, young poet Areeb Usmani talks to Faisal Fehmi about a journey most people wouldn't expect. He grew up in Mau and Azamgarh, with a father who taught Geography at AMU and wrote poetry in secret, and a mother who carries thousands of Urdu couplets in her memory. Areeb played professional cricket for two years in Lucknow and Mumbai before a major ligament injury ended his fast-bowling career, a moment he describes as his world ending. In that void he turned to writing, moved to Aligarh, and grew into serious poetry through AMU's dhaba culture and the mentorship of his seniors. He shares a funny story about first hearing of a poet named Jaun who cries at mushairas, thinking it was John Donne, before discovering Jaun Elia on YouTube. He talks about his love of prose (over 80 novels during lockdown), his mixed feelings about social media, and his affinity for Faiz Ahmed Faiz.
