Jitendra Mohan Sinha ‘Rahbar’ (1911–1993) was a teacher, poet, writer, and freedom fighter. His real name was Jitendra Mohan Sinha. He was born on 24 September 1911 in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh. A devoted follower of Gandhian philosophy, he gave up a career in law to participate in the freedom struggle and was imprisoned in 1930. Later, he served as a teacher of English Literature at National College, Lucknow.
Over his 82-year life, Rahbar wrote extensively on political and social issues in both prose and verse. Well-versed in Hindi, English, Sanskrit, Urdu and Persian, he chose Urdu as his medium of poetry. His poetry reflects his liberal convictions, profound thoughts, courage, honesty and strong sense of conviction. His poetry offers an honest reflection of his thoughts and the times in which he lived.
Rahbar was also a deeply spiritual person. He often wrote with intimacy about the relationship between human beings and God and about his belief that a good deed never goes to waste. His poetry carries a universal appeal and reflects a childlike faith in goodness, kindness and truth. He passed away on 12 August 1993.
