About The Author

Identity: Eminent short story writer, sketch writer, travelogue writer, and a unique interpreter of human psychology.

Mumtaz Mufti (original name Mumtaz Husain) was born on 11 September 1905 in Batala, district Gurdaspur (Indian Punjab). He belonged to a scholarly family that had served as muftis and qazis during the Mughal period. His father was Mufti Muhammad Husain. He received his early education in Amritsar, Mianwali, Multan, and Dera Ghazi Khan. He completed matriculation from Dera Ghazi Khan, F.A. from Amritsar, and graduated in Philosophy and Economics from Islamia College, Lahore, in 1929. His literary journey began with the short story “Jhuki Jhuki Aankhen,” published in the magazine Adabi Duniya Lahore, after which he became known as “Mumtaz Mufti.”

In his early years, Mumtaz Mufti was regarded as a liberal intellectual who maintained a distance from conventional religious traditions. He was deeply interested in the theories of Sigmund Freud and the study of human psychology. According to Ashfaq Ahmad, before the Partition of India, he was passionately fond of European literature, particularly lesser-known Swedish writers. Initially, he was also opposed to the Partition. It is said that his close association with Qudrat Ullah Shahab profoundly influenced his personality and thought, though he successfully retained his literary originality and intellectual individuality.

Mumtaz Mufti made significant contributions to multiple literary genres, including short stories, novels, sketches, travelogues, and autobiographical writing. Among his notable short story collections are An Kahi, Gehma Gehmi, Chup, Roghani Putlay, and Samay ka Bandhan. His autobiographical novels Ali Pur Ka Aili and Alakh Nagri occupy a distinguished place in Urdu literature. Ali Pur Ka Aili is regarded as one of the most important autobiographical fiction works in Urdu, in which he explored the self, society, sexuality, psychology, and spiritual conflict with remarkable boldness and artistry. Alakh Nagri reflects his spiritual quest, inner transformation, and intellectual evolution.

As a travel writer, Mumtaz Mufti also established a distinct identity. Travelogues such as Hind Yatra and Labbaik are not merely accounts of journeys but profound reflections on culture, spirituality, and human psychology. Labbaik, in particular, is considered a unique spiritual travelogue in Urdu literature. In sketch writing, books like Okhay Log, Piyaz ke Chilkay, and Talash brought him immense recognition. The personalities he portrayed were not presented merely through factual details; rather, he explored their inner selves, psychological dimensions, and unique characteristics. Mumtaz Mufti gave sketch writing a new style, a new language, and a fresh literary significance.

The most distinctive qualities of Mumtaz Mufti’s writings are their spontaneity, psychological honesty, and emotional intensity. He revealed aspects of human personality that are usually concealed. Themes such as sexuality, spirituality, fear, desire, sin, repentance, and human weakness appear in his work with boldness yet artistic dignity. He narrated his experiences and observations without artificiality or pretension, which is why his writings continue to leave a deep impact on readers.

Death: Mumtaz Mufti passed away on 27 October 1995 in Islamabad.
