Identity: Short Story Writer, Researcher and Critic
Mushtaq Ahmad Wani was born on 3 March 1960 in Bahota, Marmat area of Doda district, Jammu and Kashmir. He received his early education at Central School Bahota. He passed his matriculation examination from Government High School Guha (Marmat) in 1980, earned a Bachelor's degree from Government Degree College Bhaderwah in 1985, and completed his M.A. in Urdu from the University of Jammu in 1988. He later obtained a Ph.D. in 1999, a B.Ed. in 2003, and a D.Litt. from Rohilkhand University in 2012.
Mushtaq Ahmad Wani is regarded as one of the prominent Urdu writers, researchers, and critics of Jammu and Kashmir. He has been an active figure in the Urdu Teachers’ Guild of Jammu and Kashmir and has consistently worked for the promotion of the Urdu language and literature. Fiction writing, literary research, and criticism constitute his principal fields of interest. His literary career began in 1989 with the short story “Tadapte Panchhi” (The Suffering Birds).
He has authored numerous books in the fields of fiction, research, and literary criticism. His short story collections include Hazaron Gham, Meetha Zehar, Andar Ki Baatein, Qabr Mein Zinda Aadmi, and Kya Haal Hai Jaanaan. His major works of research and criticism include Cultural Crisis in Urdu Novels after Partition, Aaina Dar Aaina, Aitibar-o-Meyar, Feminism in Urdu Literature, Shaoor-o-Baseerat, Afhaam-o-Tafheem: Language and Literature, Tanazur-o-Fikr, Nai Tanqeedi Maanaviyat, Zaban-o-Bayan, Kahkashan-e-Khayal, and Tanqeedi Fikr-o-Fan, all of which reflect his scholarly insight and critical acumen.
