Professor Mohammad Islam (born October 27, 1930, Ambwa Maulvi, Nanpara, District Bahraich – died September 22, 1987, Karachi; buried in Block II, North Karachi Cemetery) was a distinguished Urdu scholar and researcher. He earned M.A., LL.B. and Ph.D. degrees; his doctoral dissertation was “Jigar Moradabadi: Life and Poetry” (1960, Lucknow University). Professor Mohammad Islam was among the first to conduct an in-depth scholarly study of Jigar Moradabadi, compiling and editing his unpublished poetry, letters and other writings. He also authored a number of important books on Urdu ghazal and related subjects, including Yadgār-e-Jigar, Jigar ke Khutoot (Letters of Jigar), Nigarishāt-e-Jigar, Jigar Mu‘āsireen wa Mukhliseen ki Nazar Mein, Mukhtsar Tareekh Urdu Ghazal, Beesveen Sadi ke Chand Akabir Ghazal Go . Later he migrated to Pakistan, where he continued his teaching and academic career.
