Ghalib Institute, New Delhi, is a distinguished national research and cultural institution established to preserve and promote the intellectual and literary legacy of Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib. The idea of establishing the Institute was proposed in 1969 by the National Committee formed to commemorate Ghalib’s Centenary. The committee was patronized by the then President of India, Dr. Zakir Husain, chaired by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and had Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed as its Secretary. These efforts culminated in the establishment of the Ghalib Institute in 1971. The Institute functions from Aiwan-e-Ghalib, which houses its administrative offices, museum, auditorium, guest house, and the renowned Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Research Library.

Over the decades, the Institute has played a significant role in promoting Urdu language and literature by organizing international seminars, mushairas, scholarly conferences, theatrical performances, musical evenings, literary exhibitions, and the prestigious Ghalib Awards. It also publishes the acclaimed biannual research journal Ghalib Nama and continues to produce scholarly works on Ghalib, Bahadur Shah Zafar, Zauq, Momin, and other classical literary figures.

Established in 1971, the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Research Library preserves an invaluable collection of books, rare manuscripts, handwritten documents, and research materials relating to Ghalib, his era, Urdu and Persian literature, and classical scholarship. The library serves scholars, researchers, students, and literary enthusiasts from India and abroad. A selected portion of its valuable collection is now available through the Rekhta Digital Library, making this rich literary heritage accessible to readers and researchers across the world.
