Nuqoosh, Lahore

Naqoosh is a renowned Urdu literary journal published from Lahore, Pakistan. It was first issued in March 1948, with Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi and Hajra Masroor as its founding editors. From its inception, the journal featured contributions from many of the most prominent Urdu writers and poets of the time. The editorial history of Naqoosh is divided into four major phases. The early period (1948–1949) reflected the influence of the Progressive Writers’ Movement and faced temporary suspension due to political restrictions. The second phase (1950–1951), under Waqar Azeem, emphasized literary aesthetics and classical traditions and included a notable novella edition. The longest and most influential period (1951–1986) was led by Muhammad Tufail, who shaped the journal’s identity and authored a series of celebrated biographical sketch collections. Since 1986, Naqoosh has been edited by Javed Tufail. Although technically a monthly magazine, Naqoosh is especially known for its extensive special issues on major literary themes and personalities, many of which are regarded as independent reference volumes. The journal is valued for its inclusive approach, balancing classical traditions with modern literary thought.
