Urdu, Aurangabad Deccan

The official journal of Anjuman Tarraqi Urdu Hind, Risala Urdu, was launched in January 1921. It published high-quality, authentic, and credible research and critical articles. The magazine was so significant that Premchand called it the leader of Urdu journals. Under the section Afkar-o-Waqiyat, Maulvi Abdul Haq used to write about the state of the Urdu language. Many writings concerning the Urdu-Hindi controversy were also published in this journal. The section Baad-e-Kuhan featured discussions on poets and their poetry. Regarding this journal, Maulvi Ghulam Rabbani remarked: "Leaving aside India, even in Europe and America, there are very few magazines that maintain such a high standard and refined literary taste as Risala Urdu." After the partition of India, Risala Urdu began to be published from Pakistan. The journal’s index from 1921 to 1962 was compiled by the author of Makhazat, Sadiq Sarfaraz Ali Rizvi, while the index from 1966 to 1998 was prepared by Misbah-ul-Usman. Dr. Yunus Ghazi documented all its contents in chronological order, demonstrating the vast thematic scope of the journal. As Jamiluddin Aali put it: "Risala Urdu laid the foundation of a scholarly and research-oriented approach, which was almost nonexistent in Urdu. In this way, it also holds a significant position as a guide in the research of Urdu journalism."
