ذات ẕāt fem. of ẕū, q.v.

A ذات ẕāt (fem. of ẕū, q.v.), s.f. Possessor, owner, mistress (in these senses used as a prefixed noun; and often better rendered 'having, possessed of, endowed with'); essence, substance, nature, radical constituent; soul; body, person, self (i.e. a man's self, or a thing's self); generation, breed, tribe, caste; genus, species; sort, kind (in these senses, prob. connected, through the Persian, with the S. जाति; H. jāt; which the Hindūstānīs commonly corrupt into ẕāt); (in Gram.) a real substantive, a substantive (=ism-ě-ẕāt, as opp. to ism-ě-maʻnī, and to ṣifat):—ẕātuʼl-jamb, s.m. The pleurisy:—ẕātuʼr-riya, s.m.(?) Inflammation of the lungs, pneumonia, peri-pneumony:—ẕātuʼṣ-ṣadr, s.m. Inflammation in the chest; pleurisy; a collecting of matter in the chest:—ẕātuʼl-ʻamūd, Being at a perpendicular:—ẕāt jānā (=jāt jānā), To lose caste, become an outcast:—ẕāt denā (apnī), To give up (one's own) caste, or to relinquish the benefits of (one's) religion, by eating, &c. with a person of another caste;—to give caste (to, -ko), to receive (one) as a member of a caste or sect (=jāt denā):—ẕāt-se girā-huʼā, adj. & s.m.
