A معروف maʻrūf, vulg. mārūf (pass. part. of عرف 'to know'), part. adj. Known, well-known; famous, noted, celebrated, notorious;—(in Gram.) active (voice);—s.m. The active voice (of a verb);—(in Alg.) a known quantity;—the letters و and ي are said to be maʻrūf when the former has the sound of ū in nūr, and the latter that of ī in pīr.
