A صفر ṣafar (v.n. fr. صفر 'to be empty,' &c.), s.m. The second month of the Arabian calendar (on the 20th day of this month is held the festival of Sar-o-tan, in commemoration of the junction of the head and body of Husain: the 28th and the last days of this month are reckoned unfortunate; the former on account of Hasan's being poisoned by his wife; the latter because destructive vegetables are supposed to be produced on that day):—ṣafaru-l-muz̤affar, s.m. 'Safar the victorious or fortunate,' the month Safar.
