P تاوان tāwān (S. तर्पण, rt. तृप्), s.m. Satisfaction, compensation, amends, recompense, retaliation; penalty, forfeit, fine, mulct; fine for bloodshed (opp. to qiṣāṣ, q.v.);—debt; a loan:—tāwān bāṅdhnā, tāwān lagānā, tāwān lenā, v.n. To fine, mulct, amerce:—tāwān dilānā (-ko), To cause compensation to be made, to adjudge damages:—tāwān denā (-ko), To make amends, pay a penalty.
