Iqbal Ashhar on Life, Ghalib, and the Soul of Urdu | Rekhta Room | Season 1 | Episode 6 . He grew up in Kucha Chelan, walking past the houses of Mir Dard, Momin and Ghalib on his way through the day. In this Rekhta Room episode, Iqbal Ashhar talks with Faisal Fehmi about what that does to a person. He describes feeling guided by those poets rather than merely near them, and about a neighbourhood where the literary past isn't history so much as the layout of the streets. He's exacting about language. He recalls being corrected as a boy for saying chaku instead of chaaqu, gussa instead of ghussa, and makes the case that a language's beauty sits in its articulation, not just its vocabulary. On writing, he separates aamad from aavard. The first line of a ghazal usually arrives as a gift. Everything after it means waiting for the same emotional weather to return, which is the part nobody talks about. Then the AI question. His position is that a machine can master behr, the mathematical side of meter, and still miss the sautiyat entirely, the auditory texture where the feeling actually lives. In the rapid fire he picks Nasir Kazmi as the poet he'd have befriended, for the plainness of him, and names Shamsur Rahman Faruqi, half joking, as the one he'd have argued with.
