Profile of Parveen Shaghaf
Parveen Shaghaf is a sensitive, dignified, and prominent voice in contemporary Urdu poetry. Her real name is Shagufta Parveen. She was born on 14 May 1980 in Bihar Sharif, Nalanda district, Bihar, India. She received her early upbringing and education in Kolkata and has been residing in Delhi for many years. She completed her graduation in Urdu and later continued pursuing higher studies alongside her literary and creative engagements.
Her poetry reflects the bittersweet experiences of life, emotional pain, love, surrender, feminine sensibilities, and social realities with remarkable simplicity and seriousness. Her first poetry collection, “Zindaan”, was published in 2024 and received appreciation from literary circles. Several well-known singers have rendered her poetry in their voices, and she has participated in national and international mushairas, literary gatherings, All India Radio, and television programs including Doordarshan.
Apart from poetry, she has also contributed significantly to prose writing. Her short stories, essays, and articles on literary personalities have appeared in reputed journals and newspapers. She edited Asad Badayuni’s selected poetry collection in Devanagari script under the title “Tujh Se Bichhad Ke” (2025). A book on the life, literary contributions, and critical appreciation of Asad Badayuni titled “Ghamzada Aur Bhi Hain Shehr Mein” is forthcoming.
Parveen Shaghaf is actively associated with literary and social organizations. She serves as the President of Solitaire Literature Foundation and is also a member of the advisory board of the quarterly digital magazine “Mauj-e-Khayal.” In recognition of her literary contributions, she has received several national and international honours, including the Aalami Adabiyat Urdu Lifetime Achievement Award (UK, 2023) and the India Poets Conference Qatar Award (2023).
