Dr. Sarfaraz Khalid is an Urdu poet, scholar, literary critic, fiction writer, and educator associated with the Department of Urdu at Aligarh Muslim University, where he has served as an Assistant Professor since 2019.

Born on 3 March 1980 in Bhawara, Madhubani, Bihar, he completed his higher education at Aligarh Muslim University. His doctoral research, titled ‘Bain-ul-Mutuniyat Aur Azadi Ke Baad Urdu Afsana, examined intertextuality in post-Independence Urdu fiction. Published later as a book, the study was widely appreciated for its distinctive subject and critical methodology.

Before entering academia, Dr. Khalid worked in journalism for nearly eight years and held the position of Deputy Head of Desk at a media organisation. His experience across journalism, research, translation, teaching, and literary criticism has shaped a wide-ranging engagement with Urdu language and literature.

He has written poetry, short fiction, critical essays, and research papers, many of which have appeared in leading Urdu literary journals. He has also presented papers at national and international seminars, participated in radio and television programmes, and moderated literary discussions at prominent cultural platforms, including Rekhta.

Although his literary interests extend across fiction, criticism, and journalism, ghazal remains central to his creative expression. His poetry draws upon tradition while developing a distinct contemporary voice. Rather than relying on overt ornamentation, his ghazals foreground lived experience, emotional intensity, layered meaning, and the existential struggles of the individual.

Known for his engaging teaching style, thoughtful conversation, and deep literary insight, Dr. Sarfaraz Khalid continues to contribute meaningfully to contemporary Urdu scholarship and creative writing.
