Profile of Maktaba Shahrah, Delhi

Maktaba Shahrah, New Delhi, located in the historic Urdu Bazaar of Delhi, was one of the city's prominent Urdu publishing houses. It earned distinction for its significant contribution to the promotion of Urdu language and literature, particularly the Progressive Writers' Movement. The institution also published the literary journal Shahrah, edited by the renowned poet Sahir Ludhianvi. Its inaugural issue appeared in January 1949 and became an important platform for progressive thought and modern literary expression.

Maktaba Shahrah played a pioneering role in introducing the classics of world literature to Urdu readers and in publishing the works of leading progressive writers. Its publications included literature, fiction, novels, literary criticism, translations, and other important works. The institution believed that books should not only provide literary enjoyment but also acquaint readers with life, human values, and the highest ideals of humanity.

During the 1980s, a devastating fire caused extensive damage to the publishing house and its valuable collections. Unable to recover from this loss, the institution eventually ceased its operations. Although Maktaba Shahrah no longer exists in Urdu Bazaar, its contribution to Urdu publishing, progressive literature, and the dissemination of world classics remains an important chapter in the history of Urdu publishing. A selected collection of its publications is now available through the Rekhta Digital Library, enabling readers and researchers around the world to access this valuable literary heritage online.
