Inder Jeet Lal was born on 21 October 1926 in Murree (Rawalpindi). After the Partition of India, he migrated to Delhi. He obtained an M.A. in English Literature, an Honours degree in Urdu, and a Diploma in Journalism. He began his professional career with the Urdu newspapers Pratap and Bande Mataram, and later joined The Indian Express. In 1959, he became associated with the editorial division of a national publishing organization and retired as an Editor in 1986.
Alongside journalism, his literary interests extended to popular science writing, history, biography, fine arts, children's literature, and humor. His historical, cultural, and satirical programs were also broadcast by All India Radio, New Delhi.
Inder Jeet Lal is regarded as one of the leading Urdu writers of popular science literature for children. He presented scientific subjects in a simple, engaging, and informative manner. A distinctive feature of his writings is the integration of science with Indian culture, philosophy, history, and the achievements of Indian scientists, thereby fostering both scientific awareness and cultural understanding among young readers.
His notable works include Aaj Ki Science, Naya Hindustan, Science Aur Hindustan, Atom Ki Kahani, Science Ki Baatein, Hamare Science Daan, Hum Aur Hamare Bachche, Hamare Qaumi Hero, Babbar Sher Ki Kahani, Gehun: Kasht Aur Khoj, Phal Phool Anaaj, and Janwar Se Insaan Tak. Several of his books received national awards and recognition.
Besides Urdu, he also wrote in English. His notable English works include Candle Smoke (on the life and poetry of Ghalib) and A Short Biography of Mirza Ghalib.
Death: Inder Jeet Lal passed away in Delhi on 6 June 1990.
