About The Author

Identity: Philosopher, Sufism Scholar, and Translator

Dr. Mir Waliuddin was born in 1903 into a respected scholarly and aristocratic family in the historic neighborhood of Fateh Darwaza in Hyderabad, Deccan. His father was counted among the distinguished intellectuals and elites of the Hyderabad State, while his mother belonged to a prominent Nawab family. He received his early education at Madrasa 'Mufeed-ul-Anam' and at home. In 1922, he went to Lahore to pursue his Munshi Fazil education at Punjab University, where he also had the privilege of meeting Allama Muhammad Iqbal. Later, he completed his B.A. from Osmania University in 1924 and his M.A. from Aligarh Muslim University in 1926. On a scholarship from the Hyderabad government, he went to London for higher studies, where he obtained a Ph.D. from London University and a Bar-at-Law degree from Middle Temple in 1928.

In 1929, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Osmania University. In 1946, he became a Professor and Head of the same department. Additionally, he served as the Director (Nazim) of 'Dairat-ul-Ma'arif al-Osmania'. Even after his retirement in 1958, he continued to render academic services as a Research Professor for three years.

Dr. Mir Waliuddin is regarded as a distinguished author on philosophy, Sufism, and Islamic thought in Urdu. He presented the complex terms and debates of philosophy in simple and lucid Urdu and played a vital role in translating modern philosophical literature into Urdu. His writings on Sufism, ethics, Islamic thought, psychology, and character building are considered essential reference works. He was a regular contributor to renowned research journals, especially "Ma'arif", while maintaining a deep intellectual connection with Nadwat-ul-Musannifeen, Delhi, from where many of his books were published.

His prominent publications include "Quran Aur Tasawwuf", "Falsafa Kya Hai", "Falsafa Ki Pehli Kitab", "Bunyadi Masail-e-Falsafa", "Ibtal-e-Maadiyat", "Beemari Aur Us Ka Rohani Ilaj", "Ilaj-e-Khauf-o-Huzn", "Quran Aur Seerat Sazi", "Quran Aur Tameer-e-Seerat", "Rumooz-e-Ishq", "Khwaja Banda Nawaz Ka Tasawwuf Aur Sulook", "Iqbal Aur Hadees-e-Jabr-o-Qadr", "Agar Mein Tabeeb Hota", and "Rahnumaye Quran". He also translated several important English, Arabic, and Persian books on philosophy, Islamic studies, and ethics into Urdu, including "Muqaddama-e-Falsafa-e-Hazira", "Muqaddama-e-Ma'baad-ut-Tabiyat", "Tareekh-e-Falasifa-e-Islam", "Tareekh-e-Masail-e-Falsafa", "Tahafut-ul-Falasifa", "Makarim-ul-Akhlaq", and "Ma'baad-ut-Tabiyat".

Death: He passed away on December 1, 1975, in Hyderabad, Deccan.
