ABOUT THE LIBRARY
Idara-e-Adabiyat-e-Urdu, Hyderabad, was established in 1920 under the leadership of the renowned scholar, linguist, and historian Dr. Mohiuddin Qadri Zore. More than a literary association, it emerged as an influential literary and cultural movement dedicated to the promotion of Urdu language and literature across the former Hyderabad State. The institution played a pioneering role in research, writing, publishing, and preserving the literary and cultural heritage of the Deccan. With branches across different districts of the state, it worked to promote Urdu, encourage literary scholarship, preserve historical and literary monuments, and foster a refined literary culture.
Over the years, the institution undertook a wide range of activities, including adult education, book publication, library services, preservation of literary and historical archives, a museum, a women's section, preparation of an Urdu encyclopedia, and the publication of literary journals. Its library became an important center for rare books and research materials relating to Urdu language, literature, history, and Deccani culture. Increased government support after 1944 enabled the expansion of its activities, eventually leading to the construction of Aiwan-e-Urdu, which continues to serve as its academic and cultural headquarters.
Idara-e-Adabiyat-e-Urdu remains well known for its publications and scholarly journals. The celebrated Urdu literary magazine Sab Ras is one of its most significant contributions. The institution also conducts the Urdu Mahir, Urdu Alam, and Urdu Fazil examinations, which are recognized as equivalent academic qualifications by several educational institutions in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. A significant portion of its valuable collection of books and publications is now available through the Rekhta Digital Library, allowing readers and researchers around the world to access this rich literary heritage.
