hasrat se nigāh ham ne kar lī
I deeply sigh, when, her, I see
and glance at her / then wistfully
kyā jaane koī ki ghar meñ baiThe
us shoḳh se raah ham ne kar lī
who would know / whilst staying home
with her I've gained proximity
bande pe na kar karam ziyāda
bas bas tirī chaah ham ne kar lī
pray, favour not this slave so much
enough, enough, I'm done with thee
jab us ne chalā.ī teġh ham par
hāthoñ kī panāh ham ne kar lī
safety in her arms I found
when she swung her sword at me
naḳhvat se jo koī pesh aayā
kaj apnī kulāh ham ne kar lī
my cap, I then kept at a slant
if someone acted haughtily
zulf-o-ruḳh-e-mahvashāñ kī daulat
sair-e-shab-e-māh ham ne kar lī
I've relished many moonlit nights
when faces, tresses favoured me
kyā der hai phir ye abr-e-rahmat
taḳhtī to siyāh ham ne kar lī
O rain of mercy, what delay?
my slate I've blackened totally
dī zabt meñ jab ki 'mus.hafī' jaañ
sharm us kī gavāh ham ne kar lī
in self control, I gave my life
in witness, stood her modesty
