in āñkhoñ se aab kuchh na niklā
ġhair-az ḳhūñ-nāb kuchh na niklā
from these eyes, no water emerged
save for blood, nothing else was purged
bose kā kyā savāl lekin
us muñh se javāb kuchh na niklā
I had asked / for a kiss, but sigh!
from those lips / there was no reply
bāham huī yuuñ to dīd-vā-dīd
par dil kā hijāb kuchh na niklā
face to face, our eyes engaged, although
e'en a bit / heart's shyness did not go
juz terī havā ke apne sar meñ
mānind-e-habāb kuchh na niklā
save desire for you, in my mind
naught was there, bubble-like, to find
kartā thā bahut sā mujh pe da.avā
par vaqt-e-hisāb kuchh na niklā
many claims, on me, she chose to mount
but naught was there / on day of account
siine meñ jo dil kī kī tafahhus
juz dūd-e-kabāb kuchh na niklā
whom, I had assumed to be a friend
turned out just a drunkard at the end
ham samjhe the jis ko 'mus.hafī' yaar
vo ḳhāna-ḳharāb kuchh na niklā
