Wasim Malik (birth name: Muhammad Iqbal Malik, born on 28 August 1956 in Surat) is a distinguished Urdu poet, known for his heartfelt expression and humanistic sensibility. From an early age, he had a deep passion for poetry and literature. Between 1980 and 1983, he received his initial literary training from Aamir Surati and the late Rafique Tonki, and later, in 1986, became a disciple of Wali Aasi, the celebrated mentor of noted poet Munawwar Rana.
He is the first Urdu poet from South Gujarat to be honored with the Gujarat Gaurav Award (2010) by the BJP-led Government of Gujarat. Wasim Malik is also the first poet from Surat to have successfully represented the city on international literary platforms.
Wasim Malik is not only an accomplished poet but also a person of noble character—an embodiment of love, a sincere friend, socially active, and deeply admired for his humility and compassion. He served as a councilor in the Surat Municipal Corporation from 1987 to 1993, and again from 2001 to 2005, and continues to be engaged in social service even today.
