The Battle of Karbala is one of the most significant events in Islamic history, leaving a lasting imprint on religious consciousness, moral thought, and cultural memory. In 680 CE, corresponding to 61 AH, Imam Husayn and his companions were killed at Karbala. Their martyrdom has been remembered across generations as a powerful symbol of steadfastness, sacrifice, and resistance to injustice. The event continues to inspire historical inquiry, religious reflection, and literary expression. Numerous works have been written about Karbala across different periods. These include historical accounts, maqtal literature, elegies, narratives associated with religious gatherings, and literary and intellectual studies. Together, they explore the events surrounding the tragedy, the character of Imam Husayn, the sacrifices of the Ahl al-Bayt, and the enduring ethical and human questions raised by the episode. In Urdu literature, Karbala has inspired a rich tradition of marsiya, salaam, nauha, and prose writing. This collection brings together books on the events of Karbala, offering readers an opportunity to explore the historical episode and its varied religious, historical, and literary interpretations. The works also provide insight into the literary traditions and intellectual discussions through which the memory of Karbala has been preserved and passed down through generations. The Story of Karbala invites readers to engage with this important chapter of Islamic history through different sources, perspectives, and forms of writing. It is intended for readers interested in Islamic history, Urdu literature, religious traditions, and the enduring significance of Karbala in the moral and cultural imagination of the Muslim world.
