H نل नल nal [Prk. णलो, णलं; S. नलः, नलं], s.m. A species of reed, Amphidonax karka, or Arundo karka, or A. tibialis (syn. naṛ);—a joint of bamboo (or other hollow wood); a tube, pipe; a blow-pipe (syn. phuknī); a spout; a conduit;—a cylindrical case;—the alimentary canal;—the bamboo used by fowlers for entangling game (bird-lime being applied to the top of it);—name of the king of the Nishadhas (or of the country called Nishadh), son of Vīr-sen and husband of Damayantī (he is the hero of several poetical works famous among Hindūs, but especially of the celebrated episode of Nala and Damayantī):—nal-paṭṭī, s.f. A tax for keeping aqueducts in repair:—nal ćalānā, 'Setting the bamboos in motion'; a magical practice resorted to for the discovery of theft (two pieces of split bamboo of equal length are placed side by side, and held by two men, taken at random, one at each end; the magician then pronounces certain incantations, the efficacy of which is pretended to be such that the bamboos spontaneously move towards the place where the thief or the stolen property is, dragging the men along with them):—nala-da, vulg. nalad, s.m.
