الف alif

A الف alif, s.m. The first letter of the Arabic, Persian, and Urdū alphabets:—alifuʼllāh, 'The alif of (the word) allāh'; adj. Alone, friendless, having no friend save God; destitute, poor:—alifuʼllāh-kā ḵẖat̤t̤, The mark of the letter alif made by faqīrs on the forehead (indicative of their separation from worldly concerns, &c.):—alif-be, s.f. The a, b, c, the alphabet:—alaf honā, v.n. To become erect; to rear (as a horse).

علف ʻalaf v.n. fr. علف 'to feed'

A علف ʻalaf (v.n. fr. علف 'to feed'), s.m. Fodder, provender (for beasts), food (for cattle), grass, hay, &c.:—ʻalaf-zār, s.m. A pasture, a meadow.
