A فانوس fānūs (prob. Gr. φαρος arabicized), s.f. A pharos, lighthouse; a lantern; (in Urdū) a glass shade (of a candlestick, &c.):—fānūs-ě-ḵẖiyāl or ḵẖiyālī, or fānūs-ě-gardān, or ćarḵẖī fānūs, A Chinese lantern; a lantern into which a light framework with pictures attached thereto is inserted (the framework and pictures are caused to revolve by the smoke of the candle); a phantasmagoria; a magic lantern.
