H هاتهي हाथी hāthī [Prk. हत्यिओ; S. हस्तिक: (हस्तिन्+कः)], s.m. An elephant;—(at chess) the castle or rook;—name of the thirteenth Nakshatra or lunar mansion:—hāthī-pāṅw or pāʼoṅ, s.m. Elephantiasis (syn. fīl-pā);—fossil remains of elephants:—hāthī-ḵẖāna, s.m. Elephant's house or stable, elephant-shed:—hāthī-dāṅt, s.m. Elephant's tusk;—ivory:—hāthī-sā, adj. (f. -sī), Elephant-like, big as an elephant, huge, bulky:—hāthī-sunḍ-kā pānī, s.m. A waterspout:—hāthī-kī rāh, s.f. The galaxy or milky way (syn. ākāś-gaṅgā):—hāthī-nāl, s.f. A small cannon carried on an elephant:—hāthī-wān, (dialec.) hāthi-wān, s.m. Elephant- driver;—name of the thirteenth Nakshatra:—hāthī-haṅgām, s.m. Remission of rent, &c. for losses arising from depredations by wild elephants:—nishān-kā hāthī, s.m. The elephant which leads a procession.

(f. -ī), Low, inferior; mean, insignificant, abject, vile;—indolent;—pusillanimous, cowardly;—a low fellow; a sneak; a coward, &c.:—heṭhā karnā, v.t. To lower, to render vile or abject, to humiliate, to humble:—heṭhe (obl. of heṭhā), adv. At the bottom (of, -ke); below, beneath.
