A حبس ḥabs (inf. n. of حبس 'to confine,' &c.), s.m. Confinement, imprisonment, restriction, retention, restraint, keeping in;—a place of confinement, a prison or jail;—a prisoner;—a dam, mound, bank; a reservoir, tank, pond:—ḥabsuʼl-baul, s.m. Retention of urine, a strangury:—ḥabs-ě-dam, s.m. Keeping in the breath (which some faqīrs do as a religious act for a very long time; this is esteemed a means of prolonging life, on the principle that every man has a predestined number of inspirations to make, and the more slowly these are performed, the longer will be the period of his existence);—an asthma:—ḥabs-ě-dawām ba-ʻubūr-ě-daryā-ě-shor, Transportation for life beyond the sea:—ḥabsuʼn-nafas, s.m. Suffocation.
