حيرت ḥairat for A. حيرة, inf. n. of حير 'to be dazzled,' c.

P حيرت ḥairat (for A. حيرة, inf. n. of حير 'to be dazzled,' &c.), s.f. Perturbation and stupor (of mind), astonishment, amazement, consternation:—ḥairat-afzā, ḥairat-fazā, adj. Astonishing, amazing:—ḥairat-zada, adj. Struck with astonishment, amazed, thunder-struck, aghast:—ḥairat-maʼāb, adj. Astonished.

هاروت hārūt

A هاروت hārūt, s.m. Name of an angel (he, together with another, named Mārūt, severely censured mankind before the throne of God; they were, therefore, both sent down to earth in human shapes to judge of the temptations to which man was subject. They could not withstand them; they were seduced by women, and committed every species of iniquity, for which they were suspended by the feet in a well in Babylon, where they are to remain in great torment till the day of judgment.—See the Qorʼān, Sūra 2; Sale's Transl. p. 20).
