هلال hilāl

A هلال hilāl, s.m. The new moon; crescent-moon; the first and last two or three days of the moon (whether when new or on the wane; during the rest of the month it is called qamar):—hilāl-daur, s.m. A kind of bow.

حلال ḥalāl v.n. fr. حلّ 'to be lawful'

A حلال ḥalāl (v.n. fr. حلّ 'to be lawful'), adj. Legal, lawful, allowable, free, right, having religious sanction (opp. to ḥarām); (an animal) suitable for food, lawful to eat, killed as prescribed by law;—lawfully acquired or earned;—(a woman) laying aside mourning for the death of her husband at the expiration of one hundred days (during which time she is not by law allowed to marry):—ḥalāl-ḵẖor, s.m. One who eats what is lawful; one whose earnings are legitimate;—a man of the lowest caste (who performs the lowest functions; so called because everything is lawful food to him);—a sweeper:—ḥalāl-ḵẖorī, s.f. The business or state of a ḥalāl-ḵẖor or sweeper;—a female sweeper:—ḥalāl-kā, adj. Lawful, legitimate, pure:—ḥalāl karnā, v.t. To make lawful; to slaughter (an animal) according to the forms prescribed by the Mohammadan law;—to kill, murder;—to marry a kept woman or mistress; to make an honest woman of:—ḥalāl honā (-par), To be lawful (to or for), &c.
