H هندو हिन्दू hindū [P. hindu (=S. सिन्धु)+S. कः], adj. & s.m. Hindū; Indian;—a Hindū, a native of India who observes the precepts of the Hindū scriptures:—hindū-mat, s.m. The Hindū religion, Hindūism;—the followers of the Hindū religion:—hindū-mat-sūrmā, s.m. 'The eye-salve of Hindūism,' an epithet of the Hindū religion; or of any person regarded as profoundly learned in that religion.

H هندي हिन्दी hindī [hind, q.v. + ī = S. इकः (इन्+कः), and इका; or ईयः and इया], adj. Belonging or relating to India; Indian;—s.f. The language of the (Hindū) people of India (it is applied to the various dialects, as well as to the literary language, usually called High Hindī).

An earthen pot (for cooking, &c), a small cauldron;-globe (of a lamp):—hāṅḍī ubalnā, A pot to boil over;—(fig.) to swell out:—hāṅḍī paknā, The pot to boil;—to talk, to gossip;—a plot or plan to be concocted or matured:—(kisī-ke nām-par) hāṅḍī phoṛnā, To break an earthen pot (over the name of anyone; this is done on the departure of an obnoxious individual):—hāṅḍī ćaṛhnā (-par), The pot to be put (on the fire):—hāṅḍī garm honā, 'The pot to become warm or to be busy' (esp. by fraudulent means); to pilfer, to pocket, &c:—hāṅḍī-wāl, s.m. A partner, a confederate:—bāʼolī hāṅḍī, or dīwānī hāṅḍī, s.f. Hodge-podge.
