H جم जम jam [Prk. जमो; S. यमः], s.m. The regent of the infernal regions, and the judge of departed souls, the Pluto of the Hindūs; the angel of death; (met.) anything disagreeable or intolerable; one of a pair or couple:—jam-diwārī, s.m.=jam-diyā, q.v.:—jam-dūt, s.m. The messenger of Jam or of death (syn. malakuʼl-maut:—jam-dwitīyā, vulg. jam-dutyā, s.f. Name of the second day in the light half of the month Kārtik (when brothers and sisters dress up and exchange gifts and compliments in allusion to the attachment of Jam and Jamunā):—jam-dhar, s.m. lit.
