H کل कुल kul [Ap. Prk. कुलु; Prk. कुलं or कुलो; S. कुलं], s.m. A herd, troop, flock, assemblage, multitude; a race, caste, tribe, family, house, relations; lineage, pedigree; noble or eminent family or race, noble lineage;—a grange holding as much land as can be tilled by two ploughs each drawn by six bulls:—kulāćār (la+āć˚), s.m.
The peculiar or proper duty of a family, or caste, or race (=kul-dharm):—kulāćārya (˚la+āć˚), s.m. A family teacher, family priest; one well versed in the pedigrees and customs of different families and employed to contract marriages between them:—kul-ućhāl, s.m.=kul-boṛ, q.v.:—kul ućhālnā = kul boṛnā, q.v.:—kulārṇav (˚la+ar˚), and kul-ujāgar, s.m. An epithet of anyone who occasions the celebrity of his family or tribe (e.g. Rām; and Christ, of the tribe of Judah, &c.):—kul-badhū, s.f. A virtuous woman of a noble family:—kul-boṛ (f. -ā), or kul-boṛak (f. -ikā), s.m. One who disgraces his family; a reprobate:—kul boṛnā, To disgrace one's own family:—kul-beʼohār, s.m.=kul-dharm, q.v.:—kul-pālak, adj. & s.m. (f. -ikā), Protecting a family, nourishing or providing for a family;—one who nourishes or provides for a family:—kul-pāli or pālī, s.f. A chaste, high-born, or noble woman:—kul-pati, s.m. The head or chief of a family or race; a patriarch:—kul-parivār, s.m. Friends and relatives of the same tribe or caste, family connexions, kith and kin:—kul-pūj, or kul-pūjya, or kul-pūjak, s.m. The object of worship or reverence in a family, a household god; a family priest:—kul-tāraṇ, s.m. The saviour of his family or tribe; a youth who is a credit to his family:—kul-druh, or kul-drohī, s.m. (f. -iṇī), One who brings disgrace or injury on his own family:—kul-dharm, s.m. Practice or observance peculiar to a caste, tribe, or family; peculiar or proper duty of a family or caste or race:—kul-devatā, s.f. A principal deity; an epithet of the goddess Durgā:—kul-devī, s.f. (syn. baćan denā):—qaul-se phirnā (with gen.), To go back from (one's) word, to break one's word or promise:—qaul-qarār, s.m. Mutual agreement, compact, contract, bargain, convention, treaty, league:—qaul-qarār karnā (-se), To make an agreement or compact (with), to stipulate, covenant; to make terms (with); to bind by contract:—qaul-qalbāna, s.m. قل qul imperat. of قال for قول 'to say'
A قل qul (imperat. of قال for قول 'to say'), s.m. The first word of sūras 112, 113, and 114 of the Qorʼān (beginning respectively with the verses qul, huwaʼllāhǒ aḥaduṉ, 'Say, God is One'; qul, aʻūẕu bi-rabbiʼl-falaqi, 'Say, I seek the protection of the Lord of the Daybreak'; and qul, aʻūẕu bi-rabbiʼn-nāsi, 'Say, I seek the protection of the Lord of Men'), and used to denote one and all of these sūras or chapters;—reading any one or all of the above-mentioned sūras (this is commonly done at a fātiḥa, q.v., or, by way of benediction, over fruits or sweetmeats presented to the guest at the conclusion of the religious annual feasts held in commemoration of ancestors and other relations);—(hence) conclusion, finish, end:—qul-aʻūẕīya (fr. qul, aʻūẕu, &c.; see above), s.m. One whose practice it is to recite the sūras beginning with the words qul, aʻūẕu for a remuneration in money or food:—qul-kā melā, A fair held in commemoration of the death of Moḥammad;—a spiritualistic gathering, or kind of revival, at which men caper and dance and roll on the ground in a state of religious frenzy:—qul ho-ćukna, v.n. To be concluded, to come to an end; to be all over:—qul honā or ho-jānā, v.n. To be finished; to be worn or tired out; to be brought to the verge of death or destruction; to come to an end, to die:—qul huwaʼllāh paṛhnā, 'To repeat the words qul, huwaʼllāh, &c., or Say, God is One';—to grumble (the bowels; see s.v. aṅtrī); to be hungry.
