محرم muḥarram pass. part. of حرّم 'to forbid, prohibit,' c., ii of حرم 'to be forbidden,' c.

A محرم muḥarram (pass. part. of حرّم 'to forbid, prohibit,' &c., ii of حرم 'to be forbidden,' &c.), part. adj. Forbidden, unlawful; excluded; sacred; venerable, dignified;—s.m. 'The sacred month,' the month of Muḥarram, the first month of the Muḥammadan year (held sacred on account of the death of Ḥusain, son of 'Alī, who was killed by Yazīd, near Kūfa);—mourning and lamentation:—muḥarram-kā sipāhī, s.m. A holiday soldier (so called because fighting was prohibited in that month):—muḥarram-kī paidāʼish, 'One born in the month of Muḥarram'; the knight of the rueful countenance.
