A قل qul (imperat. of قال for قول 'to say'), s.m. The first word of sūras 112, 113, and 114 of the Qorʼān (beginning respectively with the verses qul, huwaʼllāhǒ aḥaduṉ, 'Say, God is One'; qul, aʻūẕu bi-rabbiʼl-falaqi, 'Say, I seek the protection of the Lord of the Daybreak'; and qul, aʻūẕu bi-rabbiʼn-nāsi, 'Say, I seek the protection of the Lord of Men'), and used to denote one and all of these sūras or chapters;—reading any one or all of the above-mentioned sūras (this is commonly done at a fātiḥa, q.v., or, by way of benediction, over fruits or sweetmeats presented to the guest at the conclusion of the religious annual feasts held in commemoration of ancestors and other relations);—(hence) conclusion, finish, end:—qul-aʻūẕīya (fr. qul, aʻūẕu, &c.; see above), s.m. One whose practice it is to recite the sūras beginning with the words qul, aʻūẕu for a remuneration in money or food:—qul-kā melā, A fair held in commemoration of the death of Moḥammad;—a spiritualistic gathering, or kind of revival, at which men caper and dance and roll on the ground in a state of religious frenzy:—qul ho-ćukna, v.n. To be concluded, to come to an end; to be all over:—qul honā or ho-jānā, v.n. To be finished; to be worn or tired out; to be brought to the verge of death or destruction; to come to an end, to die:—qul huwaʼllāh paṛhnā, 'To repeat the words qul, huwaʼllāh, &c., or Say, God is One';—to grumble (the bowels; see s.v. aṅtrī); to be hungry.
