J. Anderson Thomson Jr. is an American psychiatrist, author, and researcher known for his work in evolutionary psychology, cognitive science, forensic psychiatry, and the scientific study of religious belief. He earned a B.A. from Duke University in 1970 and an M.D. from the University of Virginia in 1974, where he also completed his residency in adult psychiatry.
Thomson has served as a staff psychiatrist at the University of Virginia Student Health Center and has been associated with the University's Institute for Law, Psychiatry and Public Policy. He has also worked in private practice and forensic psychiatry. He is a Trustee of the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science and has served on the Board of the Center for Inquiry.
His research covers a wide range of subjects, including racism, narcissistic personality disorder, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), forensic psychiatry, and evolutionary psychology. He is particularly known for exploring the cognitive and evolutionary origins of religious belief, a subject he discusses in his widely recognized book Why We Believe in God(s): A Concise Guide to the Science of Faith.
