Profile of Qari Mohammed Ishaque Haafiz Sharanpuri
Qari Mohammed Ishaque Hafiz Sharanpuri (23 November 1925 – 6 December 2016) was a noted Urdu poet, journalist, and scholar from Saharanpur. Born into a religious family, he memorised the Qur’an at an early age and later earned the Adeeb-e-Kamil qualification from Aligarh Muslim University. He began writing poetry at the age of nineteen and soon established a reputation in literary circles across India and Pakistan. Deeply influenced by Allama Iqbal, his poetry reflects a blend of religious thought, patriotism, and modern consciousness. A strong advocate of women’s education, he ensured that all his children received higher education. He served as the Imam of Ambala’s Jama Masjid for more than five decades and edited Nawa-e-Watan for nearly thirty years. His poetry collection Diwan-e-Chiragh-e-Rahguzar remains an important testament to his literary legacy.
