Syed Jalaluddin Umri was born in 1935 in the village of Puttagram in North Arcot district, Tamil Nadu. His father’s name was Syed Husain. He received his early education in the village school and later joined Jamia Darussalam Oomerabad, where he completed the Fazilat course in 1954. During the same period, he earned the “Munshi Fazil” degree in Persian language and literature from Madras University. He later completed his B.A. from Aligarh Muslim University.

Maulana Umri was regarded as one of the prominent leaders of the Islamic movement in India. He remained associated with Jamaat-e-Islami Hind for a long period and served as its Ameer from 2007 to 2019. Under his leadership, the organization played an important role in the fields of Islamic outreach, social reform, education, and community affairs. He also served as the Vice President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and as the Rector of Jamiatul Falah, Bilariyaganj, Azamgarh. In addition, he was associated with several religious and social institutions, including Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat, Ishaat-e-Islam Trust Delhi, and Dawat Trust.

Despite his extensive organizational and missionary engagements, Syed Jalaluddin Umri made remarkable contributions in the field of Islamic scholarship and writing. Through his association with the Department of Compilation and Authorship of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind and the Institute of Islamic Research and Publications, he authored numerous important books on Islam, society, human issues, women, Islamic dawah, and social concerns. His writings are noted for their intellectual depth, balance, contemporary relevance, and lucid style.

Among his important books are Islam ka Aaili Nizam (The Family System in Islam), Islam aur Dawat, Insan aur Uske Masail, Insanon ki Khidmat, Aurat Islami Muashare Mein, Aurat Islam ke Saaye Mein, Islam Insani Huquq ka Pasban, and Khuda aur Rasool ka Tasawwur Islami Taleemat Mein.

Jalaluddin Umri also served as the editor of the monthly magazine Zindagi-e-Nau and the quarterly journal Tahqiqat-e-Islami.

Death: Syed Jalaluddin Umri passed away in Delhi on 26 August 2022.
