Muhammad Din Fouq was born on February 25, 1877, into a Muslim Dar Rajput family in Kotli Harnarayan, a village near Sialkot. His birth name was Muhammad Din Dar, but he later achieved widespread fame under the pen name Muhammad Din Fouq. His great-grandfather, Hasan Dar, had migrated from Kashmir to Punjab during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
Fouq received his primary education in the villages of Ghartal, Jamke, Gujranwala, and Lahore, but was unable to pursue studies beyond the middle school level. In 1894, he briefly trained as a land record officer (Patwari) and spent some time in Jammu and Faisalabad.
His journalistic career commenced on January 31, 1896, with Lahore's famous publication, 'Paisa Akhbar'. After gaining four years of training in journalism there, he launched his own weekly newspaper, "Panjah-e-Faulad", in 1901, which remained in circulation until 1906. Alongside Khwaja Kamal-ud-Din, he launched the monthly journal "Makhzan" for the reformation of the Kashmiri community. In 1906, he founded the historic "Kashmiri Magazine" (which later turned into a weekly), serving the literary, political, and social upliftment of Kashmiris until 1934. He also initiated the journals "Tariqat" and "Nizam" to serve the cause of Islamic mysticism (Tasawwuf) and reform the custodians of Sufi shrines (Sajjada Nashins).
He is regarded as one of the pioneer architects of Kashmiri journalism and continuously raised his voice for the social, educational, and political rights of Kashmir. His contributions toward the abolition of forced labor (Begar), the promotion of education, and awakening consciousness among the Kashmiri masses are highly prominent.
Muhammad Din Fouq achieved extraordinary fame as a historian. He conducted monumental research on the history, culture, society, and personalities of Kashmir. His major historical works include "Tarikh-e-Kashmir", "Tarikh Aqwam-e-Kashmir", "Mashahir-e-Kashmir", "Khwatin-e-Kashmir", "Kashmir Ki Raniyan", "Shabab-e-Kashmir", "Tarikh Budshahi", "Tarikh Aqwam-e-Poonch", "Rahnumaye Kashmir", and "Maasir-e-Lahore".
