ABOUT THE LIBRARY
Soulat Public Library, Rampur was established in 1934 by the distinguished public leader and bibliophile Soulat Ali Khan with the objective of creating a public library at a time when the Raza Library was not readily accessible to the general public during the princely state period. Initially named Kutub Khana-e-Aam (Public Library), it was founded in Afsar Ali's residence in Rajdwara, Rampur. On 19 March 1935, following a public resolution, it was renamed Soulat Public Library. Recognizing its significance, Nawab Raza Ali Khan extended his patronage by allotting the upper floor of the Huzoor Tehsil building near Jama Masjid, Rampur, where the library continues to function.
Today, the library houses more than 80,000 printed books and 555 rare Arabic and Persian manuscripts. Its collection includes works in Urdu, Persian, Arabic, Hindi, and English, covering literature, history, religion, philosophy, social sciences, and many other disciplines. More than a repository of books, Soulat Public Library serves as an important literary, cultural, and intellectual centre of Rampur, regularly hosting mushairas, literary gatherings, seminars, book exhibitions, and other scholarly events.
Soulat Public Library has also permitted a selected portion of its valuable collection to be made available through the Rekhta Digital Library. As a result, many of its rare books are now accessible online, enabling readers, students, and researchers around the world to benefit from this rich literary and intellectual heritage.
