The poem took place in Martin Luther's Atlanta, USA, while the incident took place in Los Angeles. One evening we were going somewhere when we saw a beautiful couple on the side of the road holding a banner in their hands, 'We are hungry, give us some work and feed us bread". (November 1991).
अमन की चादर में
बारूद और मोहलिक हथियारों की गठड़ी बाँध के
दुनिया भर में भेजने वाले बेहिस लोगो
अपनी साज़िश-गाह से बाहर झाँक के देखो
चेहरे पर जानी-पहचानी बे-मक़्सद सी कुछ तहरीरें
थके हुए पैरों में भागते रस्तों की साकित ज़ंजीरें
जैसे आज़ादी के घर में क़ैद हों दो नंगी तस्वीरें
ख़ुश्क लबों पर प्यास भरी तल्ख़ी के सारे ज़ाइक़े लिक्खे
ख़ाली पेट को आँखों की दहलीज़ पे रक्खे
सामने एक सड़क के मोड़ पे
दो ज़िंदा साए रोते हैं
चेहरे मोहरे रंग और नस्ल में
बिल्कुल तुम जैसे होते हैं
मैले जिस्म पर अंदर का अहवाल सजाए
हाथों को कश्कोल बनाए
आने जाने वालों से कहते रहते हैं
बाबा कोई काम करा लो
और उस के बदले में हम को
रोटी ला दो
भूक मिटा दो
