Abu Isa Muhammad ibn Isa al-Tirmidhi (824–892 CE) was one of the most eminent hadith scholars and jurists of the Islamic world. Born in Tirmidh (present-day Uzbekistan), he travelled extensively across Khurasan, Iraq, and the Hijaz in pursuit of knowledge and studied under many leading scholars, including Imam al-Bukhari.
His most celebrated work, Jami' al-Tirmidhi (also known as Sunan al-Tirmidhi), is one of the six canonical collections of hadith in Sunni Islam. He also authored Al-Shama'il al-Muhammadiyyah, Al-'Ilal al-Kabir, and several other important works. Renowned for combining hadith narration with critical evaluation of narrators and discussions of juristic opinions, Imam al-Tirmidhi occupies a distinguished place in the history of Islamic scholarship.
