Bushra Rahman was born on 29 August 1944 in Bahawalpur, Punjab. She is regarded as one of Pakistan’s most popular women writers who earned distinction in fiction, column writing, poetry, travel writing, and drama. After completing her early education, she obtained a Master’s degree in Journalism from the University of the Punjab. In 1960, she married industrialist Mian Abdul Rahman.

Bushra Rahman began her literary career through short stories and column writing. Her writings soon gained immense popularity among both literary circles and the general public. Her famous column, “Chadar, Chardiwari aur Chandni”, was published in the daily Jang for many years and became especially popular among Pakistani women. In this column, she discussed eastern social values, family life, women’s issues, cultural traditions, and social attitudes in a simple, graceful, and engaging style.

She was also a successful novelist and fiction writer. Her novels and stories reflected Pakistani society, particularly the emotions, struggles, and social issues faced by women. Her prose is marked by fluency, subtle satire, and a reformist spirit. Among her well-known novels and books are Allah Mian Ji, Chaand Se Na Khelo, But Shikan, Chara Gar, Kis Mor Par Mile Ho, Parsa, Pyasi, Lazawal, Sharmeeli, Lagan, Baoli Bhikaran, and Tere Sang Dar Ki Talaash Mein. Her short story collections Chup, Bahisht, Ishq Ishq, and Pasheman also received wide appreciation. Her travelogue Tik Tik Deedam Tokyo became highly popular among readers.

Bushra Rahman also wrote dramas for PTV and private production houses. Her writings strongly highlighted women’s rights, self-confidence, and social justice. She criticized social customs and traditions that restricted women’s freedom and personal growth.

Alongside literature, she remained active in politics. She began her political career in 1983. She was elected to the Punjab Assembly in 1985 and 1988, and later became a member of the National Assembly in 2002 and 2008 representing the Pakistan Muslim League (Q). She was widely respected for her dignified, tolerant, and graceful political conduct.

In recognition of her literary and journalistic services, the Government of Pakistan awarded her the Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 2007.

Death: Bushra Rahman passed away in Lahore on 7 February 2022.
