Ishrat Afreen ranks among the most renowned poets of Pakistan. Known for her feminist poetry, she has fought hard to secure the rights of women. She was born in a well-educated family in Karachi on December 25, 1956.
Ishrat completed her M.A. in Urdu from Karachi University, though she started writing poetry at a much younger age. She became a published poet when she was merely 14. After that, she never looked back. Until now two of her collections, "Kunj Peele Phuloon Ka" and "Dhoop Apne Hisse Ki", have been published. Besides this, various magazines of India and Pakistan publish her work every now and then.
Nowadays, Ishrat resides in America with her family and is associated with the Urdu department of the University of Texas. She has been honoured with several important awards for her services to literature.
